A man in New Mexico who was filmed attacking two dogs with landscaping rocks has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The court also imposed a $5,000 fine, and the offender was taken into custody immediately to begin serving his term for Extreme Cruelty to Animals.
The case began in February 2025 when a disturbing video surfaced online.
The footage showed the man, Cobos, striking two dogs, Billy and Nani, with heavy landscaping rocks.
Police launched an investigation shortly after the video spread across social media.
Veterinary records later confirmed that the dogs suffered significant trauma and distress during the attack.
Prosecutors said the video itself became the most powerful evidence in the case.
The Chief Deputy District Attorney explained that the clear footage left little doubt about what had happened.
Because of that evidence, the court ordered the offender into immediate custody to serve the full prison sentence.
The District Attorney said the case reflects how the law views animals today.
He explained that animals are sentient beings capable of feeling fear and pain, and protecting them is part of a shared responsibility in any community.
When cruelty toward animals leads to serious consequences, it reminds the public that violence against defenseless animals will not be ignored.
For Billy and Nani, the court’s decision represents accountability for the suffering they endured.
Yet while justice can punish cruelty after it happens, millions of animals still face danger long before anyone steps in to protect them.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive, also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays - thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year.
That cycle can be broken — but only if compassionate people like you step in with as low as $5 a month.
Together, we can make sure every dog and cat has the chance to live free from suffering.
