Today is Mother’s Day, and for stray animals, it is not about flowers or comfort.
It is about staying alive long enough to keep their babies alive.
Bentley was a stray in Texas when she went into labor during a weekend of heavy storms.
Rain kept falling while she searched for somewhere to give birth, but there was no shelter and no dry ground.
She delivered eleven puppies outside, exposed to the cold and the rain.
By the time she was found, only eight were still alive.
A rescuer found the puppies soaked, covered in fleas, and pressed tightly against their mother.
Bentley was exhausted, yet she kept her body around them, holding them close despite everything she had already lost.
Rescuers carried Bentley and her puppies to safety that day.
Warmth replaced the rain, and soft blankets replaced the ground.
For the first time, Bentley and her puppies could rest without fighting to survive.
Even then, the damage was not over.
One more puppy died in the days that followed.
The remaining seven held on and slowly grew stronger.
Bentley stayed with them and gave everything her body could.
Still, it was not enough to save them all.
Bentley’s fight to keep her puppies alive is not rare.
Every day, millions of stray mothers face the same impossible battle, trying to protect their young ones in a world without shelter, food, or safety.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive, also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays - thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year.
That cycle can be broken — but only if compassionate people like you step in with as low as $5 a month.
Together, we can make sure every dog and cat has the chance to live free from suffering.
Thank you for caring and for helping animals.
