Save Dogs Beaten and Cooked Alive in China

Small dogs are not exempt from the dangers of the meat trade.

Warning: Graphic images appear below. They are included to show the reality and severity of the dog and cat meat trade.

A dog spends days trapped inside a crowded wire cage without food or water.

There is not enough space to lie down.

Paws become trapped between sharp metal bars.

Raw skin is scraped away as bodies are forced against wire cages for hundreds of miles.

By the time many animals reach Yulin, some are severely dehydrated, too weak to stand properly, or bleeding from untreated wounds.

Between June 20 and June 30, thousands of dogs and cats are expected to be slaughtered and eaten during Yulin's annual dog and cat meat event.

Many of the animals arriving in Yulin are transported across China in crowded cages and filthy conditions.

Investigators found small companion dogs, some still wearing collars, among animals headed for slaughter.

Across China, an estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are killed for meat every year, with thousands more expected to be slaughtered during the Yulin event alone.

Behind every plate of dog meat is an animal who was transported, confined, and killed for human consumption.

Critics of the cruel trade report that some dogs are beaten to death.

Others have reported cases of animals being cooked while still alive.

Investigators recently documented stalls piled with the bodies of slaughtered dogs and cats.

Meat cleavers chopped through carcasses as vendors prepared them for sale.

A recent survey found that 87.5% of Yulin residents never or rarely eat dog or cat meat.

Another 88% said banning the trade would have no impact on their lives.

The event is not an ancient tradition.

It was created in 2010 by dog meat traders to increase sales.

The slaughter is scheduled to continue through June 30 unless action is taken.

U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue, can call on Chinese authorities to permanently shut down the dog and cat meat trade in and around Yulin.

He can press Chinese officials to stop the trafficking of dogs and cats transported into the city for slaughter.

Your signature sends a clear message to the Chinese authorities that dogs and cats should not be trapped in cages and slaughtered for meat.

Please sign today and urge Ambassador David Perdue to push for a permanent end to Yulin's dog and cat meat trade.

Thank you for taking action for animals!
