New Discovery: orangutan shocks scientists

Updated: Aug 1

Fascinating scientific discovery: an orangutan was seen using a medicinal plant to treat his wound!

"To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of active wound treatment with a plant species with medical properties by a wild animal," said evolutionary biologist Caroline Schuppli. [1]

Rakus, a Sumatran orangutan, was injured underneath his right eye during a fight with another orangutan. Researchers then watched as he chewed up a plant known for pain-relieving properties and smeared the liquid on his wound. The plant is also known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antioxidant abilities.

As you know, animals have amazing skills, abilities, and knowledge!

Tragically, orangutans are an endangered species. This is due to humans destroying their habitats for palm oil and other agricultural products. [2]

1. Buy sustainable palm oil or avoid palm oil. Look for products labeled as containing certified sustainable palm oil. You can also choose to avoid palm oil and use other oils instead. [3] By changing your shopping habits, you can help protect the orangutans' home.

2. Buy FSC-certified products. Choose products with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label. This certification is designed to help ensure that the forests are managed sustainably, protecting the ecosystems orangutans depend on.

3. Spread the word! Share information with friends and family about the threats to orangutans and how sustainable purchases can make a difference. The more people are informed, the greater the impact!

As humans, we have the unique opportunity to take action when we see animal suffering!

Thanks so much for caring about animals!

Hundreds of millions of stray dogs and cats are born into the world, only to know pain and suffering.

That’s why we’ve made it our mission to end the number 1 cause of suffering and death for dogs and cats -- overpopulation -- by developing a permanent-lasting birth control cookie that will only need to be eaten one time, and it will in effect spay or neuter -- without surgery.

Drug companies refuse to help address the number 1 biggest crisis facing dogs and cats around the world. But we will not give up! We will proceed at the grassroots level to end the Cycle of Suffering!

Help end the number 1 cause of suffering for dogs and cats ... for as little as $1 a month
