Mojo, the "Father of Stray Dogs" story still breaks me

While some people call me the Father of the Animal Rights Movement in the U.S. I want to introduce you to Mojo the Father of Stray Dogs - as told by famed photographer Brett Cole: 

Mojo was found in the middle of a street. 

His scalp was torn open, his face soaked in blood, one eye swollen shut, and his head covered in raw, infected tissue and maggots.

The worst part? 

People were walking by him like he was not even there.

Yes, I Want to Help Dogs Like Mojo

Mojo was scary-looking and he smelled strongly of rot and death.

When Brett asked a man "why isn't' anyone helping?" -- the man just laughed.

Another man shrugged his shoulders and said there was an animal hospital five minutes away, but still no one did anything.

Yes, I Will Help Suffering Dogs Like Mojo

Because of all the maggots on his scalp, it was clear that Mojo had been in this condition for weeks. 

The smell of infection clung to him, and still, no one helped.

But Brett tried. 

Mojo licking his painful wounds before he was rescued.

Brett chased Mojo through narrow alleys and empty backyards. 

Mojo ran away from everyone because he knew what happens when a street dog tries to get close to people.

Instead of helping, people pulled their children away, while others raised their hands to hit Mojo.

Mojo kept trying to push his way into homes, something no street dog does. 

He went door to door until he collapsed, defeated.

I will stop here, because the rest is too depressing.

I wish I could say Mojo was the only one suffering.

The truth is, there are millions of Mojos on the streets around the world, born into suffering and forced to survive among people who have no intention of helping.

Many are hit by cars, beaten, poisoned, or killed. 

Most die without ever knowing compassion, peace, or even kindness.

Even worse, the next generation is being born right now -- into the same suffering.

Yes, I Want to Prevent the Suffering of Future Mojos

We cannot erase Mojo’s suffering. 

But we can honor Mojo by making sure it never happens again.
