A man in England who pretended to run an animal charity has been sentenced to five years in prison and banned for life from owning animals.
He convinced people to hand over their dogs, often paying him to help find the animals new homes.
Many believed they were giving their companions a second chance.
Investigators later discovered the animals were being neglected and left to suffer.
Dogs and a cat were found living in terrible conditions. Investigators also found the remains of 41 dogs.
In total, the cruelty charge covered 21 dogs and one cat who were still alive when officers intervened.
The case became one of the largest animal cruelty investigation police in that region have ever handled.
Authorities gathered evidence for months, speaking with people across the country who had trusted the man with their animals.
Faced with the evidence, he admitted 11 counts of fraud and one count of animal cruelty in court.
The judge sentenced him to five years in prison and issued a lifetime ban preventing him from ever keeping animals again.
Courts sometimes issue temporary bans. A lifetime ban means he can never legally own an animal again.
Some of the surviving dogs rescued from the property have since been rehomed and are now living safely with families.
Justice came too late for many of these animals. And right now, millions more are still unprotected.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive, also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays - thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year.
That cycle can be broken — but only if compassionate people like you step in with as low as $5 a month.
Together, we can make sure every dog and cat has the chance to live free from suffering.
