A Canadian court has delivered the longest prison sentence in the country’s history for animal cruelty, sending a clear message that animal lives are not disposable.
Two people were sentenced to 12 years in prison and permanently banned from owning or being near animals after admitting they tortured and killed more than 90 animals for videos sold online.
The court heard that many of the animals experienced prolonged suffering before they died.
“I firmly believe this case will be the leading case on cruelty to animals, probably for the next 100 years,” noted one of the legal experts involved.
The permanent ban closes a painful gap that has allowed some offenders in other cases to return to living with animals after serving time.
In the U.K. courts can impose prison sentences of up to five years for animal cruelty.
The U.S. has federal protections against certain acts of extreme cruelty, yet sentencing lengths differ widely by state.
Canada has now set a new benchmark with a sentence that reflects the scale and severity of the harm.
Accountability at this level shows that suffering inflicted on dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other animals is no longer brushed aside as a minor offence.
This sentence does more than punish the harm done.
It reminds us how many animals are still exposed to danger every single day.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to more than 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens each year.
Tragically, those who survive also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays - thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year, leading to endless generations of suffering.
This is why we are developing a one-time, permanent-lasting, birth control Cookie that, when eaten, will spay or neuter a homeless dog or cat without surgery, to end the overpopulation crisis.
You can help the next street dog before they are born into the same misery, starting at just $5 a month.
Thank you for caring and for helping animals.
