Las Vegas has approved a citywide ban on selling dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and pot-bellied pigs in pet shops.
The ban covers all new pet shops immediately, while the 13 existing shops must stop selling these animals by November 2028.
Las Vegas now joins major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Toronto, which have already passed similar retail-sale bans.
Many families in Las Vegas have surrendered animals shortly after buying them.
Shelters in the city have reported people surrendering puppies still carrying pet store receipts.
Ending retail sales reduces the number of animals entering shelters after being purchased from high-volume suppliers.
Violations of the new rule can lead to fines between $250 and $500, while shops with repeated violations may lose their permits.
With this ban, more animals will reach homes through adoption instead of commercial channels, and fewer will be abandoned.
A well-known advocate summarized the impact, saying that ending retail sales reduces pressure on shelters, limits the pipeline from large breeding operations, and gives rescued animals a greater chance at stability.
But for the animals never reached by laws like this one, life still starts with hunger, danger, and no home to stay in.
The world’s 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays – thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year.
This is why we are developing a one-time birth control Cookie — to safely and permanently spay or neuter a stray dog or cat, without surgery.
Millions of dogs are born with no place to call home.
With your help, we can make sure every win for animals brings us closer to ending this cycle of suffering for good.
Thank you for caring and for helping animals.
