A rare win for animals: 200 fin whales saved this year

Good News!
For the second year in a row, Iceland’s largest whale-killing company, has called off its summer killing season — a temporary but precious pause for the endangered fin whale.
That means 200 fin whales, the ocean's second-largest animals, have been spared from a violent death.
The decision follows mounting global pressure and dwindling demand for whale meat.
This drop in interest is a major reason that killing may soon end for good.
"Fin whales have been granted a lifeline, being spared from the deadly harpoons in Icelandic waters this summer," says Sharon Livermore, Director of Marine Conservation at IFAW.
The alternative would have been grim.
The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority found that over 40% of whales do not die immediately from the first shot.
Instead, they suffer prolonged and painful deaths, some taking over an hour to die.
This is a rare and hard-earned win for animals.
Each of those spared whales could grow up to 80 feet long and live for 90 years in the wild — a natural lifespan now restored to them.
The future of these hunts remains uncertain, but this latest halt proves that change is possible — and public pressure works.
Just as these fin whales have been given a reprieve from suffering, we're working toward a world where dogs and cats no longer face the suffering caused by overpopulation.
The world’s 600 million stray dogs reproduce every year - and give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies - and those who survive also reproduce - and this cycle of suffering is repeated, year after year.
Of course, our feline friends suffer the same fate. They too suffer from their own cycle of suffering, every year.
The good news is that again, thanks to you, 600 is creating a nonprofit, super birth control cookie that will enable us to break this cycle of suffering.
When the cookie is finished, a dog or cat will only have to eat ONE cookie - to be safely spayed or neutered - without surgery.
A “one-dose” cookie like this will allow us - together - to end the global cycle of suffering.
Thanks for helping and caring about animals.

I would also like to know about this cookie? Is it safe? What are the side effects and long term effects? Sounds strange to me......please explain to us. Thank you.
Wonderful work. Can you tell us how this cookie can neuter an animal safely? I love the idea and sure hope it is successful. Linda
