1 in 3 Animals Will Disappear this July

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, a campaign focused on helping animals stay safe and avoid becoming lost in the first place.
An estimated one in three companion animals will go missing during their lifetime.
In the U.S. alone, roughly 10 million dogs and cats are reported lost each year.
One of those animals was Lola, a dog from Georgia who once saved her family's lives by alerting them to a house fire in the middle of the night.
Years later, Lola disappeared after becoming frightened by July 4 fireworks.
Her family searched for her and checked local shelters, but Lola never returned home.
Her story is a reminder that it only takes one unexpected opening, one moment of confusion, or one frightening event for an animal to disappear.
Here are five practical steps that can help keep your companion animals from becoming lost:
1. Check Fences After Every Major Storm
Storm damage can create escape routes that are easy to miss.
Strong winds, fallen branches, flooding, and shifting ground can weaken fences and gates without obvious signs of damage.
A quick inspection after severe weather can reveal damage before it becomes an escape route.
2. Create a Safety Plan for Moves and Travel
Many animals go missing during moves, vacations, and temporary stays in unfamiliar places.
New surroundings often come with open doors, distracted people, and disrupted routines.
Planning ahead can help prevent a stressful transition from turning into a disappearance.
3. Know Which Situations Cause Panic
Fireworks, thunderstorms, construction noise, and large gatherings are common triggers for escape attempts.
Animals that normally stay close to home may react very differently when frightened.
Recognizing those risks allows you to prepare before they occur.
4. Make Identification Visible and Current
Microchips are important, but they cannot be seen by a neighbor who finds a wandering dog or cat.
Readable tags with current contact information often provide the fastest way home.
Reviewing them regularly takes a few minutes.
5. Keep Recent Photos on Your Phone
When an animal goes missing, people often begin creating flyers and social media posts immediately.
Clear photos that show size, markings, and distinguishing features can make search efforts more effective from the very beginning.
Every lost animal hopes for a reunion.
Yet hundreds of millions of dogs and cats are born without a home to return to in the first place.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive also reproduce, creating another generation of homeless strays and repeating the cycle of suffering year after year.
This is why our mission is to end the #1 cause of suffering and death for dogs and cats — overpopulation — by developing a Cookie that will only need to be eaten one time, and it will, in effect, spay or neuter — without surgery.
With your help, we can stop the cycle before another generation is born into homelessness and suffering.
Thank you for helping and for caring.
