Your Dog Will Love These Ideas: National Dog Week
National Dog Week begins today, giving us a whole week to celebrate the dogs who share our lives and encourage people to appreciate and care for them.
More than one million dogs are adopted from shelters in the U.S. each year, giving them the chance to become part of a family.
National Dog Week is a good time to celebrate the dogs already in our homes while remembering the dogs still waiting for theirs.
Here are four ways to celebrate National Dog Week with your dog:
1. Take Your Dog on a New Adventure
Choose a dog friendly place your dog has never visited before.
A new park, trail, or quiet outdoor area gives him new smells, sights, and sounds to explore.
Bring water and keep the outing suited to your dog's age and fitness.
2. Turn Mealtime Into a Treasure Hunt
Hide small portions of your dog's normal meal in safe places around the house and let him find them.
Start with easy hiding spots, then make the game harder once he understands what to do.
You can use part of his regular meal for this activity rather than adding extra treats to his diet.
3. Give Your Dog a Choice
Put two of your dog's favorite toys in front of him and let him choose which one to play with.
You can also offer two safe walking routes and see which direction he prefers.
Small choices like these give you a chance to discover what your dog enjoys most.
4. Celebrate Your Dog's Favorite Person
Take your dog to visit someone he gets especially excited to see.
Bring along his favorite toy and let them spend some relaxed time together.
If the person lives nearby, make the visit part of a walk so your dog gets two things he enjoys in one outing.
National Dog Week gives us seven days to do something special for our dogs.
But for millions of dogs around the world, the greatest gift we could give is a future where fewer are born without homes and left to survive on their own.
The world's 600 million stray dogs and 87 million stray cats give birth to over 1 billion homeless puppies and kittens every year.
Tragically, those who survive, also reproduce and give birth to another generation of homeless strays - thus repeating the cycle of suffering, every year.
