Your Dog's Favorite Holiday is Almost Here
Tomorrow is National Hug Your Hound Day, a day to appreciate the dogs who share our lives by spending more time with them and seeing the world from their point of view.
According to a recent survey, 97% of U.S. dog guardians consider their dog part of the family.
If your dog is one of those family members, tomorrow is the perfect opportunity to make the day a little more about them.
Here are five ways to observe National Hug Your Hound Day.
1. Let your dog decide where the walk goes
Skip your usual route and let your dog choose the direction.
Allow plenty of time to stop and sniff.
Dogs experience the world through scent, so those extra few minutes are often the most rewarding part of the walk.
2. Look around your home from your dog's eye level
Sit on the floor and look around each room.
You may notice electrical cords, medications, cleaning products, small toys, or other hazards that are easy to miss when standing.
3. Do your dog's favorite activity
Forget your own schedule for a while and spend time doing what your dog enjoys most.
It could be playing fetch, swimming, hiking, brushing their coat, or simply relaxing together.
The activity matters less than the time you spend together.
4. Take your dog somewhere new
Visit a different park, walking trail, or quiet neighborhood.
New places give your dog different scents, sounds, and experiences while giving both of you a chance to make a new memory together.
5. Show affection the way your dog enjoys it
Some dogs love hugs.
Others prefer a belly rub, a game of fetch, or gently leaning against the people they trust.
Pay attention to what your dog enjoys and celebrate them in a way that makes them feel comfortable.
Today is about appreciating the relationship you already have with your dog.
