Heatstroke Killed Her Hours After Rescue
People at a train station in Australia heard dogs barking from inside a locked metal bike locker.
When police and rescue workers opened the locker, they found two dogs trapped inside.
Chili was dead.
Ebony was suffering from severe heatstroke and died later that day despite efforts by veterinarians to save her.
A dog trapped in extreme heat cannot escape, find shade, or cool his body.
As his temperature rises, he can suffer heatstroke, organ failure and death.
Right now, a bill before Parliament in New South Wales, Australia, gives lawmakers the chance to stop dogs from being left in vehicles until extreme heat kills them.
The bill would make it illegal to leave a dog unattended in a vehicle for more than 10 minutes when temperatures are above 82°F, unless adequate cooling or ventilation is running.
Violators could face fines of up to US$31,000, or up to one year in prison.
The bill would also:
Ban collars fitted with metal spikes that dig into a dog’s neck
Require clean water for animals tied outside longer than two hours
Require pain relief when sheep undergo mulesing, a procedure that cuts skin from around their rear
Tara Moriarty is the New South Wales Agriculture Minister who introduced the bill.
The legislation cannot protect another dog until it becomes law.
Until then, dogs can still be left in vehicles where heat can kill them, animals can be kept without water, and painful procedures can be performed without pain relief.
