Dogs and cats are pampered in North China, but slaughtered in South China

Every summer, the killing starts again.
Right now, in the city of Yulin, China, thousands of dogs and cats are packed into cages, dragged into slaughterhouses, and butchered for meat.
Some are still wearing collars when they are killed.
Many are companion animals, while some are strays.
They are piled into crates so tightly that they cannot turn around.
Others collapse during the journey, starved, injured, or worse.
The ones who survive are dragged into market stalls, where they are killed for meat.
The sounds at the market are unbearable.
Dogs crying.
The clank of metal hooks, the thud of meat-cutting knives, and the smell of fear and blood are thick in the air.
The worst part is that this “festival” is not a culture or tradition, but a sales tactic invented by meat traders to increase sales.
What they created is one of the most horrifying spectacles of animal cruelty in the world.
A new survey shows that nearly 90% of Yulin residents don’t eat dog or cat meat, and say a ban would not affect them at all.
The people reject this cruelty, but still it continues.
There are no national animal cruelty laws in China to stop it.
So we are turning to the U.S. Ambassador to China to speak directly to Chinese officials and encourage more cities to outlaw the dog and cat meat trade.
He has the power to push for lasting change.
And every year we wait, thousands more animals will suffer for it.
Let us make sure this is the last summer dogs and cats are slaughtered in a "festival."
Thank you for helping and caring about animals.
