Petco has recently announced they will be selling live rabbits in their stores again. This is a sickening and greedy decision that will cause the suffering and death of thousands of sweet, fragile, loving rabbits — unless it is stopped by caring people like you! [1]
In 2008, Petco stopped selling rabbits after pressure from animal advocates — a decision that should have remained final. [1]
Rabbits sold in pet stores are routinely born in cruel, cramped rabbit breeding mills similar to puppy mills. It's estimated that 80% of rabbits sold as gifts for Easter or Christmas are abandoned or die within a year. [2] [3]
Meanwhile, adorable rabbits are being killed in shelters in huge numbers due to lack of homes. Although rabbits are the third-most abandoned animal, right after dogs and cats, the number of rabbits killed in shelters is unknown, since often these deaths go uncounted.
Rabbits are not the only animals suffering because of Petco. Petco continues to sell hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, and about 10 different types of birds. Of course this is also cruel and should end! These innocent small animals are available for adoption from shelters and rescue groups and should not be treated as objects!
Please take action today to save animals! Thank you!
